Booked your practical driving test but need to move it? There is now a firm limit on how often you can do that. Since 31 March 2026, you can change a booked test only twice. It used to be six.
That makes it worth knowing exactly what counts as a change, and what your options are once you have used them up.
What counts as a change
These actions use up one of your two changes:
- Moving your test to a different date or time.
- Moving your test to a different test centre.
- Doing several of these at once, such as moving the date and the centre together, counts as one change. GOV.UK gives exactly this as its example.
What does not count
Some small updates are not counted against your allowance, including:
- Updating your contact details.
- Adding or removing your instructor's reference number.
If the DVSA moves your test
Sometimes a test is moved for reasons outside your control, such as bad weather or an examiner being unavailable. DVSA has said that changes it makes do not count against you, and that it will reset your allowance so you can make two further changes. Check your messages and GOV.UK for the position on your booking.
Where you can move your test to
Since 9 June 2026, if you need to move your booking to a different centre, you are limited to the centre you first booked or one of the three centres nearest to where your test is booked. The DVSA publishes the list of nearest centres. This is another reason to choose your first centre carefully: you cannot simply move to any centre you like later on.
What to do when you have used both changes
Once you have used your two changes, you can no longer move the test. If you still need a different date, the way forward is to cancel and book again. A new booking starts with a fresh allowance.
Two things to weigh up before you cancel:
- The refund rule. The DVSA generally refunds the test fee if you cancel with at least 10 full working days' notice. Cancel later than that and you can lose the fee.
- You may not find a better date. Cancelling gives up the slot you already have. There is no guarantee a new appointment will be sooner, so treat it as a last resort.
How to make your two changes count
- Pick your centre carefully the first time. Choose somewhere you are happy to take the test, bearing in mind the nearest-centres rule.
- Do not use a change for a small gain. Moving a test forward by a few days is rarely worth a change.
- Be sure you are ready. An earlier date is no help if you are not prepared. Failing means paying again and waiting again.
- Remember it is your booking. Only you can change it, so keep your login details safe.
If your aim is to find an earlier date, read how to find an earlier driving test date.
Paying or getting back a difference
If you move to a more expensive slot, such as an evening or weekend, you pay the difference. If you move to a cheaper weekday slot, you are refunded the difference. To change a car test for free you need 10 full working days' notice, counted Monday to Saturday.
You must change it yourself
GOV.UK says you must change your car driving test yourself, and that your instructor is not allowed to change it for you. You can change it online or by contacting DVSA for help.
Cancelling resets your allowance
After two changes you cannot change again, but you can cancel and book a new test, which starts with a fresh allowance. DVSA has also said that if it changes your test, for example because of bad weather, that does not count as one of your changes.
Frequently asked questions
How many times can I change my driving test?
Twice. Since 31 March 2026 a booked practical test can be changed two times.
Does changing my instructor's details count?
No. Adding or removing your instructor's reference number does not use one of your changes.
How do I swap my test with another learner?
DVSA says learners swap by phoning customer services together, and should not share personal details such as their licence number with each other. Check GOV.UK for how a swap affects your changes.
What happens after two changes?
You can cancel and book a new test. Cancel at least 10 full working days before the test to get your fee back.
