Failed Your Driving Test? How and When to Rebook
Failed your practical driving test? Here is how soon you can take another one, what rebooking involves, and how to use the wait well.
By the SlotBrowser team · Last reviewed
Failing a practical test is disappointing, but it is common, and it is not the end. Here is what you need to know about booking another one.
How long you must wait
You have to wait at least 10 working days after a failed test before you can take another. That is the earliest date you can sit the test. Given long waits in many areas, your next real date may be further away.
Rebooking means a new booking and a new fee
A new attempt is a new booking, with the fee paid again. Our guide to how much a driving test costs lists the current fees.
Check your theory pass
Your theory pass is valid for two years. A failed test and a long wait can eat into that time. Check how long your theory test pass is valid.
Use your feedback
The examiner gives you feedback on what went wrong. Go through it with your instructor and practise those areas before you book again. Moving too quickly into another test without fixing the problem risks another fail.
Should you look for an earlier date?
Only if you are ready. A quick rebooking is no use if you are not prepared. See finding an earlier date, and remember the two changes limit.
Steps to rebook
- Review the feedback with your instructor.
- Agree how many more lessons you need.
- Have your details ready. Use the booking checklist.
- book your own test: nobody else can rebook for you.
Making sense of your feedback
Your examiner marks faults as minor, serious or dangerous. Look at which areas appear most, and ask your instructor to take you through each one on the road. Fixing two or three recurring problems is usually more useful than doing more general driving.
Look after your confidence
Many people pass at a later attempt, and many experienced drivers failed at least once. Treat the first fail as information. Give yourself a short break, then have a clear plan for what you will practise.
Timing your next attempt
The earliest you can retake is 10 working days after the fail, but in practice the gap will usually be longer. Use it. Work out how many more lessons you need, check your theory pass still covers the date, and read when to book your test before choosing one.
If you are tempted to rush
A quick rebooking can feel like a way to get over the disappointment, but a rushed second fail costs another fee and another wait. Read about common booking mistakes.
