7 Driving Test Booking Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

Most booking problems are avoidable. Here are seven that cost learners time and money, and how to avoid each one.

1. Booking before you know your theory dates

Your theory pass lasts two years. Check how long your theory test pass is valid before you choose a date.

2. Using up your changes too quickly

You can make only two changes to a booking. Moving a test for a small gain can leave you stuck later.

3. Forgetting the refund deadline

Cancel at least 10 full working days before your test to get your fee back. See cancelling a driving test.

4. Picking a centre you cannot reach

A date at a centre you cannot get to calmly is not a good date. Read how to choose a test centre.

5. Not having your details ready

When a good slot appears it can go quickly. Keep your licence number, theory certificate number and card to hand. Use our booking checklist.

6. Letting someone else book for you

Since 12 May 2026, you must book your own test. A booking made by anyone else is not allowed under the learner-only rule.

7. Paying more than the official fee

The official fee is the same for everyone. Be wary of anyone who charges extra for a slot, and read about booking scams.

The simple fix

Write down your key dates on the day you book: the test date, the refund deadline and the theory expiry date. Then check them before you change or cancel anything.

What these mistakes have in common

Almost all of them come from rushing. A slot appears, you feel pressure to take it, and a detail you did not check, such as a deadline or an expiry date, comes back to cost you later. The antidote is preparation: know your dates before the moment comes.

A one-minute pre-booking check

  1. Is the date inside my theory test pass?
  2. Can I realistically be ready by then?
  3. Can I get to the centre calmly?
  4. What is my cancellation deadline, and have I written it down?
  5. Is this worth one of my two changes if I need to move it?

If you have already made a mistake

Do not panic. Check what your options are: you may be able to change the booking, or cancel with a refund if you still have enough notice. Our guides to manage your booking and cancelling a driving test explain the choices.
