Theory Test Pass Valid for 2 Years: What If It Expires?

Passing your theory test is a big step, but the clock starts ticking on the day you pass. Your theory test pass is valid for two years. Here is why that matters when you book your practical test.

You need it to book

You cannot book a practical car test until you have passed your theory test. When you book, you enter your theory test pass certificate number along with your driving licence number. Our booking checklist lists everything else you need.

The two-year window

You must pass your practical test within two years of passing the theory test. If you do not, the theory pass runs out and you have to take the theory test again, and pay for it again.

Why long waiting times make this important

With waits of several months in many areas, it is easy to lose time. If you passed your theory test a long time ago and have been waiting for lessons, a practical test date months away could land close to the end of your two years. Do the sums when you book.

Count back from the test date, not the booking date

What matters is the date of your practical test. If you move your test later, check that the new date is still inside the two years. That is another reason to use your two changes with care.

What to do

  1. Write down the date you passed your theory test and the date it runs out.
  2. Book your practical test with plenty of time left, and read when to book your test.
  3. If a cancelled date will fall after your theory pass runs out, do not take it.

Worked timeline

Suppose you pass your theory test in January. Your pass is valid until the same date two years later. If you book your practical test in the spring and the first date available is five months away, your test would still be comfortably inside the two years. But if you waited a year before booking, a long wait for a date, plus a fail and a rebooking, could push you toward the limit. Working back from the expiry date is the safest approach.

Practical steps

  • Put the expiry date in your phone calendar with a reminder six months before.
  • Tell your instructor the date, so they can plan lessons with it in mind.
  • If you are close to the limit, treat a date that falls after your expiry as unusable, however tempting.

Other rules to keep in mind

Booking a practical test also means following the 2026 rules: you must book your own test, you can make only two changes, and a refund depends on cancelling with enough notice. See our 2026 booking rules.
