Driving Test Cancelled by the DVSA? What Happens Next

Sometimes it is not you who changes the plan. A practical test can be cancelled or moved by the DVSA for reasons outside your control. If it happens to you, here is what to expect and what to do.

Why tests get cancelled

  • Bad weather, such as snow, ice or flooding, that makes testing unsafe.
  • An examiner being unwell or unavailable.
  • Problems at the test centre or on the local roads.

How you will be told

The DVSA contacts you using the details on your booking, which is why it matters to keep your email address and phone number up to date. Updating contact details does not use up one of your changes. If the weather looks bad, check your messages before you set off.

What DVSA says

DVSA says you are not penalised when it changes your test, for example because of bad weather. It does not count towards your two changes, and DVSA has said it will reset your allowance so you can make two further changes. How a new date or a refund is arranged can vary, so follow the instructions in the message DVSA sends you and contact DVSA if you are unsure.

Does it count towards your change limit?

Since 31 March 2026 you can make only two changes to a booking yourself. DVSA has said that changes it makes do not count against you, and that it will reset your allowance. Check your messages and GOV.UK for the position on your booking.

What to do

  1. Read the message carefully and note the new date or the refund details.
  2. Tell your instructor straight away.
  3. If the new date does not suit you, see finding an earlier date.
  4. If you cancel it yourself later, remember the 10 working day notice rule in our cancelling a driving test guide.

Staying prepared for a short-notice cancellation

Most cancellations come with some warning, but a few do not. A few simple habits help:

  • Check your email and phone on the morning of the test, especially in winter.
  • Make sure your instructor can reach you as well.
  • Keep your confirmation email in a place you can find quickly.

Make use of the new date

A cancellation can be an opportunity. If the new date is later, you have more time to prepare. If it is sooner or earlier than you expected, talk to your instructor about whether you are ready. Our guide to finding an earlier date covers how to think about moving dates.

When you want a different date

If the date you are offered does not suit you, check what your options are on GOV.UK. The rules about moving a test yourself, including the limit on changes and the nearest-centres rule, are explained in our 2026 booking rules guide.
