Driving Test Day Checklist: What to Bring and Check
What to bring, how to prepare the car and what to expect on the day of your practical driving test, so nothing catches you out.

You have booked, practised and waited. Now make sure test day itself goes smoothly. Here is a practical checklist.
The night before
- Check your confirmation for the time and the test centre address.
- Plan your journey and allow plenty of time.
- Get a good night's sleep and avoid cramming.
- Check your messages in the morning in case the test has been moved. See a test cancelled by the DVSA.
What to bring
- Your UK driving licence. You must be recognisable from the photo. If you have no photocard licence, bring a valid passport and your paper licence.
- Your theory test pass certificate, if you have it.
- Your glasses or contact lenses, if you need them to drive, so you can pass the eyesight check.
- Your booking confirmation, in case you need to show it.
The car
Most learners use their instructor's car. You can use your own if it meets DVSA's rules, so check the official guidance on GOV.UK first. Make sure the type matches your booking. See manual or automatic test. GOV.UK warns that your test will be cancelled, and you will not get your money back, if you do not take the right things with you.
What happens when you arrive
- The examiner checks your licence and asks you to confirm your details.
- There is an eyesight check: you read a number plate from a set distance, which is about 20 metres.
- You are asked a couple of vehicle safety questions.
- The driving part follows. GOV.UK says to expect to drive for around 35 minutes, including a period of independent driving.
The examiner asks whether you want someone to sit in the back. This is usually your instructor, but it can be a relative or friend. They must be over 16 and cannot take part in the test.
Keeping calm
Nerves are normal. Breathe, drive at your own pace, and remember a minor fault is not a fail. If you make a mistake, put it behind you and focus on the road ahead.
After the test
You will be told the result and given feedback. If you pass, the examiner gives you a pass certificate. If you do not, read rebooking after a fail.
