Manual or Automatic Test? What It Means for Your Booking
Choosing between a manual and an automatic driving test affects the licence you get. See what changes when you book and how to decide.
By the SlotBrowser team · Last reviewed
One of the choices you make when you book your practical test is whether you will take it in a manual or an automatic car. It is a bigger decision than it looks, because it decides which cars you are allowed to drive afterwards.
What the choice means for your licence
- Pass in a manual car and your licence covers both manual and automatic cars.
- Pass in an automatic car and your licence is limited to automatic cars.
Electric cars are usually automatic, so passing in one normally gives an automatic-only licence. Check with your instructor and GOV.UK.
Does it change the fee or the booking rules?
GOV.UK lists the fee by day and time, not by transmission type, and the 2026 rules apply in the same way. See how much a driving test costs and our 2026 booking rules guide. You must tell the booking service which type of test you are taking, and use a car that matches your choice on the day.
Availability and waiting times
Waiting times can vary between test types and centres. It is worth looking at the dates for both if you are undecided, but do not choose purely on the date, because the choice affects your licence for good. See why waiting times are so long.
How to decide
- Think about the cars you may want to drive. If you might need a manual in future, a manual licence is more flexible.
- Ask your instructor. Learning to drive a manual car can take longer, which may affect your date.
- Consider the future. You can later take a manual test to remove an automatic-only restriction, but that means another test and fee.
Tell the right person early
If your instructor provides the car for the test, check that they have the type you need available on your date. Our questions to ask your instructor lists what to check.
Upgrading from automatic to manual
If your licence is automatic only, you can upgrade it by passing a driving test in a manual car. GOV.UK says you do not need to pass another theory test, and that you book an upgrade test by phone with DVSA, not online. You can start learning in a manual car at any time, following the usual rules, including displaying L plates.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drive a manual if I pass in an automatic?
No. An automatic pass limits your licence to automatic cars.
Is the test fee different for automatic?
GOV.UK lists the car test fee by day and time, not by manual or automatic.
Can I change from automatic to manual after I have booked?
You can change the booking, but changes count towards your limit of two. Check the options on GOV.UK.
