7 Questions to Ask Your Instructor Before You Book

Since the 2026 rules, your instructor cannot book your test for you, but they are still the best source of advice on when and where. Ask these seven questions before you book.

1. Am I ready now, or how many more lessons do I need?

An honest answer sets your timing. Read when to book your test for more.

2. Which test centres do you recommend?

They know the routes and which centres tend to have shorter waits. See how to choose a test centre.

3. Will you be available on my test date?

If you give the system your instructor's reference number when you book, it can check their availability. Adding or removing it does not use one of your two changes.

4. What will you charge for test day?

Many instructors charge for the car and a warm-up lesson. Ask for the price now so it does not surprise you. See how much a driving test costs.

5. Do you have the right car available?

Check they have a manual or an automatic car as needed. See manual or automatic test.

6. What should I do if I need to change or cancel?

Agree how and when you will tell each other, and make sure you know the refund deadline. See cancelling a driving test.

7. What can I do while I wait for a date?

With long waits, practising the right things matters. Ask for a plan, and read why waiting times are so long.

Frequently asked questions

Can my instructor book my test for me?

No. Since 12 May 2026 only the learner can book.

Should I use my instructor's reference number?

It is optional but useful, because the system can then check they are available on your date.
