When Should You Book Your Driving Test? A Timing Guide
Book too early and you may not be ready; book too late and you may wait months. A practical guide to timing your practical driving test booking.
By the SlotBrowser team · Last reviewed
Timing is one of the trickiest parts of booking your practical test. With long waits in many areas, booking early can make sense. But a test you are not ready for wastes a fee and a place.
How much practice do you need?
GOV.UK's advice is to take your test only when you can do everything without instruction, and it sets no minimum number of lessons. Everyone learns at a different pace, and your instructor is the best judge of when you are ready.
Why many learners book before they feel ready
If the first available date is months away, you can book now and use the wait to improve. That only works if you can use your booking sensibly. Read why waiting times are so long for why waits are so long.
Be careful about moving it later
If you book early and then need more time, moving the date uses up one of your two changes, and cancelling gives up your place. Choose a date that you could realistically be ready for.
Check your theory pass
Your theory pass is valid for two years. If a long wait is likely, check that your test date falls well inside it. Read how long your theory test pass is valid.
A simple approach
- Ask your instructor how many more lessons they expect you to need.
- Look at availability at the centres you can use.
- Choose a date a little after the time you expect to be ready.
- Note your refund deadline, and keep looking for an earlier date. See finding an earlier date.
Signs you are close to ready
- You drive for most of a lesson with little or no help from your instructor.
- You handle unfamiliar roads and busy junctions calmly.
- Your mock tests are mostly clean, with no serious or dangerous faults.
- Your instructor says they would be happy for you to take the test now.
Signs you should wait
- You still depend on instructions for basic things such as junctions or roundabouts.
- The same mistake keeps appearing in your lessons.
- You feel pushed by someone else's timetable rather than your own readiness.
Plan around the wait
If dates are months away, work backwards: how many lessons will you have by then, and does your theory pass cover the date? Our guide to why waiting times are so long explains why dates are so far off, and finding an earlier date covers what to do if you want to move.
Frequently asked questions
Can I book my practical test before I feel ready?
