Parents' Guide: Helping Your Teen Book a Driving Test

If your teenager is learning to drive, you probably want to help with the booking. Under the 2026 rules there is a lot you can do, but the booking itself has to be made by the learner.

The rule in brief

Since 12 May 2026 only the learner can book, change, view and cancel their practical driving test. A parent cannot log in and do it for them. See our full guide to who can book.

How you can help

  • Sit with them while they book and talk through the options.
  • Help them plan around exams, work and your own diary, so the date is realistic.
  • Help with costs. See how much a driving test costs for what to budget.
  • Get them there. Plan the journey to the test centre, and make sure they are not rushing on the day.

Things to talk through together

  1. Are they ready? Ask their instructor. See when to book your test.
  2. Which centre? See how to choose a test centre.
  3. What are the refund and change rules? See cancelling a driving test and two changes.
  4. Is the theory pass still valid? See the theory test pass is valid.

Watch out for resellers

Teenagers who see long waiting times may be tempted by someone offering a quick slot for extra money. Talk to them about booking scams, and remind them never to share their licence details or passwords.

Give them space

Pressure to book quickly can lead to a test taken before they are ready. Encourage them to take advice from their instructor, and to book when it feels realistic.

Frequently asked questions

Can I book my child's test for them?

No. Only the learner can book, change or cancel their own test.

Can I be with them when they book?

Yes. You can help and support them in person.

What should we check before booking?

Their theory pass is valid, their instructor thinks they are ready, and you both understand the change and refund rules.
