What to Do While You Wait for a Driving Test Date
Stuck waiting for a practical test date? Here is how to keep your skills sharp, protect your theory pass and avoid scams while you wait.

Test dates can be a long way off, and waiting is frustrating. The weeks before your test are still useful if you plan them. Here is how to make good use of the time, without risking your theory pass or your booking.
Keep your skills fresh
The biggest risk of a long wait is going stale. Regular lessons and practice keep your driving consistent, so you arrive at the test in good form and not rusty. Talk to your instructor about how often to drive in the weeks before your date, and ask them to focus on the areas they think are weakest.
Practise in different conditions
Your test may fall in any weather and at any time of day. Ask your instructor to include some driving at busier times, in rain, and in places you do not yet know well. If your test centre is known to you, practise on the roads around it, since you are likely to drive some of them on the day. See our guide to choosing a driving test centre.
Check your theory pass
Your theory test pass is valid for two years. If your practical test date is far away, check that your pass will still be valid on the day. If it will not, you would have to pass the theory test again before you could take the practical. Read more in theory test pass validity.
Do not spend your changes carelessly
Since 31 March 2026 you can change your booked test twice, and changing the date, time or centre counts as a change. It is worth keeping them for when you really need them, for example if you are ill or your instructor advises you are not ready. Find out how this works in how many times you can change your driving test.
Know the cancellation deadline
If you decide you need to cancel, you generally need to give at least 10 full working days notice to get your test fee back. Put the date in your diary, so you have time to decide. Our guide to cancelling a driving test explains the detail.
Get your documents in order
Use the wait to sort out the basics: your photocard licence, your theory pass number, and the details you will need on the day. Our test day checklist lists what to bring.
Stay safe when you are keen for an earlier date
A long wait is exactly when people become targets for sellers promising earlier slots at inflated prices. Book only through the official service, and read how to spot overpriced slots and booking scams. For legitimate ways to look for an earlier date, see how to find an earlier driving test date.
Look after yourself
Nerves tend to build the closer the test gets, and a long wait can add to them. Regular practice, a good night's sleep before the day and a calm routine help more than last-minute cramming. If anxiety is getting in the way, talk to your instructor, who will have seen it many times before.
Rules and fees can change, so always check the current position on GOV.UK.
